What Happens When a Common Skill Becomes Rare?
A new report suggests that most adults may have quietly stopped reading books. History suggests that this is more than a cultural change.
Reading Is Not Disappearing
The report is easy to dismiss as another warning about declining attention spans.
People are busy. Entertainment has changed. Screens have replaced books. Artificial intelligence can now summarize in seconds what once required hours of concentrated reading.
But the larger historical question is not simply whether people are reading fewer books. It is what happens when a capability that became widely shared begins concentrating back into fewer hands.
Reading itself is not disappearing.
It is becoming scarce.
And scarcity changes value.
Widespread Literacy Was a Historical Exception
For most of human history, the ability to read deeply was limited to a small part of society.
Religious authorities, court officials, scholars, merchants and administrators possessed capabilities that most people did not. Their influence came partly from what they knew, but also from their ability to absorb, preserve and interpret written information.
- The printing press began to change that structure by making written material easier to reproduce and distribute.
- Compulsory education later carried literacy much further.
- During the Industrial Age, entire societies built schools, universities, libraries and professional institutions around the assumption that large numbers of people should be able to read, write and reason.
That was an extraordinary achievement. But it was also historically unusual.
For a relatively brief period, deep literacy became widely shared. Generations grew up believing that reading was simply part of normal adult life.
It may not remain so.
The Cognitive Labor Bubble
The expansion of literacy helped create what Veritas Silentii calls the Cognitive Labor Bubble.
Industrial society needed growing numbers of people who could work with information rather than only with physical materials.
- They read reports.
- They interpreted regulations.
- They prepared contracts.
- They examined evidence.
- They developed strategies.
- They translated complexity into decisions.
As organizations grew, these capabilities became the foundation of the modern professional class.
Education offered access to that world. Reading and writing became gateways into management, law, finance, medicine, government, consulting and countless other professional fields.
The professional ladder was built on the assumption that cognitive capability would remain both valuable and relatively scarce.
That assumption is now being challenged from two directions at once.
Cognitive Output Is Becoming Abundant
Artificial intelligence can now produce reports, summaries, presentations, recommendations and analyses in seconds.
The output that once demonstrated professional capability is becoming easier and cheaper to generate.
- A person no longer needs to read an entire document to produce a plausible summary of it.
- A manager no longer needs to write every communication.
- A junior professional can create the appearance of research without fully understanding the source material.
This does not mean the resulting work is always reliable. It means that cognitive output is becoming abundant. That distinction matters because output and capability are not the same thing.
- A polished report may conceal weak reasoning.
- A convincing summary may omit the most important qualification.
- A confident answer may be based on an incorrect assumption.
As machine-generated output expands, the ability to examine it critically becomes more important. Yet that deeper human capability may be declining at the same time.
Human Cognitive Depth May Be Becoming Scarce
Deep reading requires more than recognizing words.
- It requires sustained attention.
- It requires holding several ideas in mind at once.
- It requires distinguishing evidence from assertion, understanding context and noticing what has been omitted.
- It also requires patience — the willingness to remain with a difficult idea before deciding what it means.
Those capabilities once developed naturally through repeated exposure to books, long-form arguments and demanding written material. When that practice declines, something more than accuracy is lost.
The ability to reason through unique complexity may weaken with it.
We may therefore be entering a strange historical inversion:
Machine-generated cognitive output is becoming abundant while deep human cognitive capability becomes scarce.
There will be more information. More summaries. More analysis. More written material than any previous society could have imagined.
But there may be fewer people able to judge what any of it is worth.
What Scarcity Does
When a capability that was once common becomes scarce again, those who retain it do not merely preserve an old skill. They acquire an increasingly valuable one.
If deep reading becomes uncommon, then the ability to read critically, write clearly and reason through complexity becomes a new basis for personal differentiation.
The advantage will not belong simply to people who consume more information. It will belong to those who can understand what they consume. They will be better able to detect weak arguments, question automated conclusions and recognize when apparently sophisticated work rests on shallow foundations.
In a world overflowing with generated content, the scarce capability may no longer be producing words. It may be judgment — knowing which words and concepts deserve to be trusted.
The Historical Pattern
Periods of technological change often produce an apparent contradiction. A capability becomes easier to imitate just as genuine mastery of it becomes harder to find.
- The printing press increased access to written material, but it also increased the value of those who could organize and interpret the resulting flood of information.
- Industrial machinery expanded production, but increased the importance of people who could design, coordinate and control complex systems.
Artificial intelligence may follow a similar pattern. It will make basic cognitive output widely available. But it may also expose the difference between producing an answer and understanding one.
That difference is likely to become increasingly important.
The technology has changed. The pattern has not.
A New Basis for Differentiation
The decline of deep reading should be taken seriously as a cultural problem. But it may also be an early economic signal.
The professional world was built during a period when literacy expanded, education widened and cognitive capability became broadly distributed. That world is now being reorganized.
Routine cognitive work is being absorbed into increasingly capable systems. At the same time, some of the human abilities required to supervise those systems may be weakening.
The result will not necessarily be the disappearance of reading. It may be the return of reading as a scarce capability — held by fewer people and valued for precisely that reason.
The people who continue to read deeply may discover that they have preserved something more important than a habit.
They may have preserved an advantage.
