The SPARK Pattern
When systems mature, power rarely stays distributed among the people producing the work. It consolidates upward into the structures that coordinate, organize, legitimize, and control the system itself. The SPARK Pattern names the five stages leverage migrates through as that happens:
- Skill opens the door. Every expanding system initially rewards competence — but as skills become abundant and standardized, they stop being the primary source of leverage.
- Position moves you closer to control. The question shifts from "how good is your work" to "where do you sit inside the system."
- Authority grants legitimacy. Systems elevate certain individuals to interpret information and resolve ambiguity, extending influence beyond personal effort.
- Reach creates leverage beyond labor. Ideas, relationships, frameworks, and reputation travel and compound independent of direct output.
- Kairos — the Greek word for the decisive moment — determines whether you reposition before the structure stabilizes around everyone else, or arrive after the hierarchy has already closed.
